At last the wait is over. SQL Server 2008 has finally RTMed on the 6th of August, 2008.

Evaluation editions of SQL Server 2008 are available for download from the MSDN and TechNet sites. Technet  subscribers can download SQL Server 2008 from here, while MSDN subscribers can download it from here.

SQL Server 2008 is available in 7 editions including the new Web edition. Go ahead and try it out now. Microsoft has also included SQL Server 2008 in their August 2008 price list, which means it could be purchased right away as well.

For information on SQL Server 2008 editions and components see this.

I am one of the lucky people who got it downloaded yesterday.  But unfortunately, I couldn't install it.  It says I need to install Visual Studio 2008 Sp1. (Which is still in Beta).  This is the error message I got:

Rule "Previous releases of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008" failed.
A previous release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 is installed on this computer. Upgrade Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 to the SP1 before installing SQL Server 2008.

    Micorosoft gives a few suggestions

To avoid this behavior, use one of the following methods:

Before you install or upgrade to SQL Server 2008, install the release version of Visual Studio 2008 SP1 for all Visual Studio components.
Before you install or upgrade to SQL Server 2008, uninstall all the Visual Studio 2008 components that are earlier than Service Pack 1.
When you install or upgrade to SQL Server 2008, do not select any of the SQL Server 2008 features that require Visual Studio 2008 to be installed. For example, do not select the Analysis Services, Integration Services, or Business Intelligence Development Studio features.

For More information please check this site:

I am trying with the second suggestion.  If it works, I'll let you know.

Just to add a note: Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 has been released 11th August. It can be downloaded from MSDN. The full download is available for MSDN subscribers.
