The SQL Server Sri Lanka User Group (SS SLUG), a sub-project of SQLServerUniverse is an offline community of SQL Server enthusiasts who meet every month to discuss and learn about SQL Server and related technologies. Once registered on SQLServerUniverse.com, everyone automatically becomes a member.

This interactive session dealt with developing and deploying SQL CLR based components for SQL Server.

Session #2

Dimensional Modeling with SQL Server by Dinesh Priyankara (MVP), Business Intelligence Architect at CAMMS.

This session discussed structuring databases for BI purposes using the dimensional model on SQL Server.

February 2014 Meet-up

The February 2014 meet-up was held on February 19th, with a well-stocked set of attendees numbering 60. This month featured an up-and-coming speaker, and a novice speaker dealing with database development and high-availability topics.

January 2014 Meet-up

The opening meet-up for the new year, was held at Microsoft Sri Lanka as usual on January 22, with an audience of 47. The evening's sessions were based around database development and data mining.

Predictive Modeling with the Microsoft Naïve Bayes Algorithm by Dinesh Asanka (MVP), Database Specialist at Pearson Lanka

The session showcased the Microsoft implementation of the Naive Bayes algorithm for data mining, using many examples.

Session #2

Writing Resilient T-SQL Code Part II by Gogula Aryalingam (MVP), Technical Architect at Navantis.

Continuing from the November session last year, this session presented ways to write robust T-SQL using defensive programming methods, resulting in code that less frequently needs fixes. The session was based and inspired by the book Defensive Database Programming.

The September 2013 meet-up was held at Microsoft Sri Lanka on September 18th with an attendance of 30. The event featured speakers from Pearson Lanka.

The session introduced the concept of Transactional Replication and its intended use and best practices.

Session #2

Confusion: CXPACKET by Dinesh Asanka (MVP), Production DBA Lead at Pearson Lanka.

This session cleaned up confusion surrounding the wait type CXPACKET; why it occurs and how it can be resolved.

August 2013 Meet-up

The August 2013 meet-up was held on the 21st with an audience numbering in the 60s. The event featured SQL Server MVPs Dinesh P. and Preethi.

July 2013 Meet-up

The July 2013 meet-up was a Pearson Party, and was held on the 17th with 65 attendees at Microsoft Sri Lanka. The meet-up showcased three sessions by presenters from Pearson Lanka.

SQL Performance Testing: Leveraging LoadRunner by Malinda Mapatuna, QA Technical Specialist at Pearson Lanka

This demo-driven session showcased how HP LoadRunner could be leveraged to perform SQL Server performance testing.

Session #2

Getting High Sniffing Parameters: a parameter sniffing lesson by Madhushika Lewke, Database Administrator at Pearson Lanka

A session for developers, this session focused on the parameter sniffing phenomenon of stored procedures, and how it could affect performance, and what we could do about it.

Session #3

Replication 101 by Dinesh Asanka (MVP), Database Specialist at Pearson Lanka

In the final session, Dinesh provided an overview of Replication in SQL Server, the various topology and usage scenarios for replication, and ended with a demo on how replication can be configured.

May 2013 Meet-up

The May 2013 meet-up was held at Microsoft Sri Lanka on May 22nd, after a 2-month hiatus, with 40 attendees. The event focused on data analytics featuring two SQL Server MVPs.

Understanding Big Data by Dinesh Priyankara, oldest serving Sri Lankan MVP.

The session introduced the concepts of big data, what it is and how it is used in business intelligence and data analytics. It also covered what Microsoft has in stored for big data.

Session #2

Analyzing the IPL by Gogula Aryalingam, Technical Architect at Navantis.

This session featured the data analytics capabilities of Excel 2013 and how data analysts and power users could produce self-service data analytics using these tools. The session used the recently concluded IPL tournament as a basis for some fun data analytics.
